Large rooves

Most traditional Japanese building include large rooves. They are either made with round or curved ceramic tiles including the roof itself slightly curved upwards. The roof is also wide but well supported. Asian architecture are thought to be influenced by the Buddhist religion where the size of the roof is meant to represent the importance of the ¨Heavens¨.

Most Japanese buildings are made from wood and other flexible material.  This is due to the abondance of timber and made to resist the destruction caused by earthquakes. Japan is located in the middle of 2 tectonic plates therefore experiencs many earthquakes. See

The need to perfect nature

In Japanese culture it is important to showcase the beauty of nature; they do so by taming nature into a defined pattern. You can see this need to perfect the beauty of nature in Japanese pantings, temple gardens and rock gardens. The importance of taming nature is portrayed in home gardens or in public parcs.
